Our Mated Queens

Sherwood Hill Honey produce quality natural open mated honeybee queens (Apis Mellifera). To ensure our queens are mated to the highest quality, we select the best breeder queens and mother drone colonies every season. Our breeder queens are carefully hand-selected for honey production, disease resistance (including hygienic behaviour), and temperament. We operate on a 30+ day catch cycle, so your new queens have laid up a full frame of capped larva so we can ensure a quality laying pattern before they are sold. Each queen will come marked in the yearly colour and shipped or collected in a JZBZ cage containing 1 queen and 5-6 escorts as well as candy for the bees' journey.

Our queens are not pre-caged or banked but are maintained in nucleus colonies until time of postage or collection. Mated queens will become available in December and run through to the end of March (Tassie weather dependent).
Availability of queens depends on the demand per week, so get in early to avoid any disappointment.

Please note that our Queens are only available within Tasmania due to quarantine regulations.

Our Tested queens

Queens are introduced into our production size hives and are left until we can truly evaluate the hatched brood. As part of our inspections, we look for disease resistance (hygienic behaviour), calmness, temperament, brood laying pattern, and honey production in the queen and bees. Our tested queens have a higher acceptance rate, which means they are less likely to be superseded until much later.

It is preferable to pick up queens to ensure they arrive safely and in good condition.
